The duo version of Rain Chain retains the structural outline of the original work while expanding its rhythmic and timbral dimensions.

A steady rhythmic pattern on the marimba forms the foundation, centred around an open fifth. Above this, sustained tones on the vibraphone shape the main thematic layer. The parallel use of the pitch A on both instruments creates a subtly floating harmonic frame, from which the characteristic “droplet” figures gradually emerge.

In the duo setting, the underlying vamp is reinforced by HAPI drum, adding depth to the rhythmic structure. Glockenspiel highlights melodic accents in the upper register.

The contrasting middle section introduces harmonic shifts and increased melodic movement. The improvisational passage is extended by an additional percussion solo, leading to a stronger energetic build-up than in the solo version. The piece concludes with the return of the opening material and a gradual fading through the recurring droplet motif.

The solo version forms part of the cycle 3 Pieces on 2 Instruments for 1 Player. A trio version of the work has also been developed.
