Ganymed was composed for Duo Waltersdorfer and unfolds in a restrained, contemplative sound world.
The piece begins with a four-bar bass loop on guitar, establishing a repeating harmonic foundation. Above this vamp, handpans and RAV Vast create a spacious, slightly melancholic atmosphere. The title refers to Ganymede, Jupiter’s largest moon, and the music suggests a sense of vastness and distance rather than narrative development.
The guitar introduces the main A theme over the established loop. A contrasting B section follows in a similar tonal language, but with a subtle shift in colour and texture, partly due to the temporary removal of the bass loop.
Both sections are structured as repeating cycles, allowing additional layers to emerge in subsequent passes — notably the array mbira, which adds a shimmering, overtone-rich texture above the harmonic field.
A central solo section unfolds on the vibraphone–marimba 90° setup, accompanied by guitar within the established form. The final return gradually reduces the texture, dismantling the loop and leading the piece towards a quiet and suspended conclusion.
