Commissioned for the programme XXX – Unser Platz im Universum

This arrangement transfers Fraktal from its studio-based, overdub-rich original version into a performable live setting for eight players.

While the formal design remains unchanged, the arrangement adopts a more transparent and concentrated orchestration. The layered textures created through overdubs in the original are redistributed across the ensemble, resulting in a clearer, more exposed sound world.

The Styrian accordion countermelody of the studio version is omitted. In the central B section, the handpan solo is expanded through the addition of overtone singing. The natural overtone spectrum integrates seamlessly into the G Mixolydian sound world, reinforcing its modal colour.

As in the original version, the handpan solo leads into a vibraphone solo. The harmonic motion briefly suggests C major as subdominant before returning to G, guiding the music towards its climactic section. The reprise and structural proportions remain intact, preserving the fractal logic of the composition within a leaner, fully live-realised framework.
