This miniature arrangement transfers Tchaikovsky’s overture from The Nutcracker to a compact mallet ensemble of xylophone, vibraphone and marimba. The original orchestral material is redistributed across the three mallet instruments, preserving the clarity and lightness of the opening movement in a transparent percussive texture.

A fourth performer — designated as “Special Agent” — contributes a series of humorous and theatrical sound effects. These interventions function not merely as decoration, but as a parallel layer of commentary, introducing animal calls, mechanical sounds and unexpected colouristic accents.

The subtitle Arrangement for Percussion Quartet with Obligato Zoo & Train reflects this dual structure: alongside the faithful transcription of the orchestral writing, a deliberately playful layer unfolds, adding wit without undermining the musical substance of the original.
