Threnos is a marimba solo of calm and sustained character, unfolding as a continuous musical arc rather than a dramatic narrative. The piece moves steadily forward with a clear sense of direction, while allowing space for rubato and resonance.

A free introduction establishes the sound world of the work, followed by a formally structured middle section. The main thematic material unfolds in clearly articulated blocks, built around contrasting bass concepts: one shaped by a gradually expanding line in the low register, another defined by a simple four-note figure moving melodically up and down.

A contrasting central section introduces a shift in harmonic focus and energy before gradually returning toward the opening tonal area. The piece concludes with a quiet yet intense coda, marked by sustained rolls in wide register spacing.

Throughout the work, the full range of the marimba is explored, with an emphasis on long melodic lines, register balance, and a continuous sense of forward motion. The character is contemplative and lyrical, guided by an inner momentum toward its final resolution.

The work is dedicated to the composer’s great-aunt Uli (“Ati”).

The sheet music for this work is published by Vienna Percussion Editions.
