This arrangement of Johann Strauss’ Perpetuum Mobile reimagines the well-known miniature for large percussion ensemble. Conceived for seven players, the piece translates Strauss’ wit, drive and orchestral brilliance into a purely percussive sound world.

Rather than reducing the original, the arrangement expands its character through a wide palette of instruments — from mallet keyboards and timpani to bird calls, slide whistles and theatrical sound effects. The perpetual-motion principle of the original is preserved, while the colouristic possibilities of the percussion ensemble allow for heightened contrast and visual presence.

The work was commissioned by the percussion section of the Vienna Philharmonic and premiered as part of the intermission film of the New Year’s Concert 2025.

While remaining structurally faithful to Strauss’ form, the arrangement embraces the playful and theatrical dimension inherent in the music, resulting in a concert piece that is both virtuosic and deliberately entertaining.
