Colours was originally conceived as a work for solo vibraphone. The piece unfolds in a calm, wave-like motion shaped by gradual crescendi and decrescendi, creating a continuous and unhurried musical flow.

Beginning in D major, the harmonic language slowly expands as additional colours are introduced, moving through subtle shifts of texture and register within the vibraphone’s resonance.

At the centre of the work stands a sustained fermata on A♭ — a tritone removed from the opening key and the point of greatest harmonic distance. From there, the music gradually returns to D major, forming a restrained yet clearly perceptible harmonic arc.

The focus lies on sustained sound, delicate transitions, and the natural emergence of harmonic colour. The work invites attentive listening and careful shaping of resonance and decay.

A later duo version for vibraphone and marimba was subsequently developed, expanding the original material into a dialogue between two instruments.

The sheet music for this work is published by Vienna Percussion Editions.
