Still Moving is a solo work for vibraphone that explores continuity and transformation within a clearly defined formal framework. Calm, static outer sections frame a more animated central part, in which rhythmic motion and melodic development come to the foreground.
The piece places particular emphasis on sound control and resonance. Techniques such as precise dampening, flageolet tones and mandolin tremolo are integral to the musical material, directly shaping harmony, texture and phrasing. The interaction between sustained sound and controlled resonance remains central throughout.
In the middle section, a fixed harmonic progression opens into an improvisational passage. While the surrounding material is fully composed, this section allows for measured freedom within a defined structure. A fully notated example improvisation is provided as an optional alternative.
Rather than focusing on speed or display, Still Moving demands a refined sense of touch, timing and tonal shaping. The work centres on clarity of sound, subtle transitions and the deliberate sculpting of resonance.
