In the large percussion ensemble version, the musical material of España is expanded and distributed across a broader instrumental palette. The castanets are integrated into the overall percussion texture rather than appearing as a solo voice. Depending on the ensemble setup, mechanical castanets may also be used in this setting.
The larger instrumentation allows for increased layering and dynamic shaping while preserving the graceful character of Waldteufel’s waltz.
This version is published together with the percussion quartet version (with optional castanets). A separate chamber quartet version for violin, violoncello, vibraphone and marimba further extends the work’s instrumentation.
