This arrangement of Émile Waldteufel’s well-known waltz España transfers the orchestral texture to a compact percussion quartet setting.
The use of castanets introduces a subtle regional colour, gently suggesting the dance-like elegance associated with the title. In this smaller version, the castanets appear as a prominent and intentionally exposed part. The use of hand castanets is strongly recommended in order to allow for clear articulation and expressive shaping.
The percussion quartet version forms one side of a double-sided edition together with the large percussion ensemble version. A chamber quartet version for mixed instrumentation (strings and mallet instruments) offers an alternative colouristic approach to the work.
